Electrical Equipment and Appliances

Electrical items need specialist processing. Devices containing heavy metals, refrigerants and toxic chemicals can contaminate the ground and cannot be handled at a standard waste transfer station, so mixing them with general rubbish is not permitted. Take electronics to a designated WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment) recycling centre, or use a retailer take-back scheme.

Large Batteries

Large batteries present a real fire risk if they are crushed during collection, and they leak corrosive acid that can contaminate the rest of the load. Handling them separately is a legal requirement, not a preference. Return them to a dedicated battery recycling facility or a specialist collection point.

Gas Cylinders

Gas cylinders pose an explosion hazard under pressure or heavy machinery, and even a seemingly empty canister retains residual gas. That makes them a serious safety risk for our crews and the transfer station, so they cannot go in a skip under any circumstances. Return empty cylinders to the original supplier or an approved local facility for refilling or reuse.

Medical Waste

Anything carrying infection potential - used needles, bandages, biological fluids - needs high-temperature incineration and cannot go in a standard skip, which would breach health and safety regulations. Use a licensed clinical waste collection service; unused medication can be returned to a pharmacy.

Asbestos

Asbestos contains microscopic fibres that cause fatal lung conditions, and disturbing it during collection releases those fibres into the air. It is prohibited in all standard skips, and B&K does not remove it. You will need a specifically licensed asbestos removal contractor to clear the material safely.

Tyres

Tyres are banned from landfill, take decades to break down and can damage sorting machinery, so they need a dedicated recycling route. Take old tyres to your local tip or a specialist tyre fitting garage, which will usually take them when you buy replacements.

Fuel, Solvents, and Paints

Liquid waste, including fuel, chemical solvents and wet paint, is banned from skip hire. These liquids spill easily, creating fire hazards and a burn risk for anyone handling the load, and they contaminate soil and water supplies if they leak in transit. Take them to a council-approved hazardous waste facility.

Best for: domestic refits, garden clearances and dense, heavy waste such as soil, concrete and rubble.

Capacity: approx. 9 m³ (around 80-100 standard bin bags)

Max load: up to 7 tonnes

Best for: bulky but lighter waste - oversized timber and old furniture during a major house move or clearance.

Handles awkward, cumbersome items easily, but should not be filled with soil or hardcore.

16 YARD SKIP

Capacity: approx. 12 m³ (around 120-130 standard bin bags)

Max load: up to 7 tonnes

Best for: large construction sites and commercial clearances generating high volumes of light waste.

Choose Rubbish Removal when...

• Access is limited - no driveway, a skip lorry can't fit, or a permit is not possible.
• You need a one-off, same-day clearance rather than an ongoing skip.
• Our cage van handles it: 1 tonne loading capacity, or up to 5 tonnes with the large cage.
• It is a wait-and-load service - your waste is loaded within a standard 30-minute window, so please have it ready and accessible.
