Electrical Equipment and Appliances

The disposal of electrical equipment (WEEE), such as fridges, televisions and computers, is governed by specific recycling laws. These items contain heavy metals that can be detrimental to the ecosystem if buried in landfill. They must be taken to a registered specialist recycling centre, where they can be deconstructed safely so that harmful substances do not leach into the soil.

Large Batteries

Large batteries, particularly lead-acid variants found in vehicles, contain corrosive chemicals that pose significant health and safety risks. If placed in a skip, they can leak during transport. To prevent chemical burns and contamination, recycle them using dedicated collection boxes or take them to specialised facilities.

Gas Cylinders

Gas cylinders represent a severe safety hazard, even when they appear empty. Residual gas can remain inside, and the pressure of a compactor or an impact during transport can cause them to explode or ignite. Return these cylinders to the supplier for refilling or safe decommissioning.

Medical Waste

Biological and medical waste, including needles, bandages, and surgical by-products, presents a high risk of infection. Because this waste type is hazardous, it requires specialised treatment by licensed medical disposal companies. Keeping it out of general skips prevents the spread of disease.

Asbestos

Asbestos is a highly fibrous silicate mineral, once common in construction but now known to be a potent carcinogen. Disturbing it releases fibres that can cause severe lung conditions. Government regulations mandate that only licensed asbestos removal contractors handle this material.

Tyres

Tyres are notoriously difficult to process in landfill sites due to their durability and chemical composition. They require shredding and specific recycling to be repurposed into materials like rubber crumb. We advise contacting a Tyre Recovery Organisation so the rubber is recycled responsibly.

Fuel, Solvents, and Paints

Liquid chemicals, including fuels, solvents and paints, are chemically reactive and highly flammable. Placing these in a skip creates a risk of chemical burns, toxic fumes, and fires. They must be taken to a licensed disposal centre capable of neutralising hazardous fluids, protecting local water sources and soil.
